For all of the changes and evolving nature of the Internet, Search Engine Optimization (SEO) remains as relevant as ever. But it has also evolved significantly. Strategies differ if you are targeting local customers for your brick & mortar business or looking for a more global reach.
The core principles of SEO are still important today.
The goal is to get relevant, targeted traffic, not just any traffic. It isn't about tricking the search engines into finding you, it is about providing quality, relevant content that solves problems and fulfills visitors' needs.
Leveraging the principles of Classic SEO, local search is a little more focused on strategies that bring new leads to local (brick-and-mortar) businesses.
Optimizing your website for SEO is still important, but searches for local services also return results from Google Maps, review sites, and various industry-specific or regional directories. You need to ensure that you have a presence with the various media and also that your information is consistent across each listing or citation.
Search Engine Optimization has given way to Web Presence Optimization (WPO). That is, your digital footprint involves (or it should involve) more than just your website. It now includes your tweets, posts, likes and shares, your reviews, and whatever the next "big thing" will be. For example, Google rankings now take into account the amount of engagement (e.g. Likes, Shares, Comments) your social channels receive as well as the quantity and quality of user reviews.
SEO used to be about trying to figure out what Google wanted, and then doing that. That is fine until Google changes its algorithm one day and suddenly your great results become no results, or worse, you get penalized.
The only thing Google wants you to do is to provide high-quality, useful content that answers questions and solves problems.
Effective SEO starts with an honest approach to providing useful content, and leverages expert know-how and experience to plan a strategy that includes elements that best compliment the chosen business or industry, and most importantly, adapts to the ever changing digital ecosystem.
